Remodeling Magazine came out this week with its 28th Cost vs. Value Report, comparing construction costs for 36 popular improvement projects with their perceived impact on a home’s resale price.

Members of the National Association of REALTORS determined – in 102 U.S. markets – that only about half of those 36 projects would actually be expected to improve a home’s resale price. Of those, only five projects in Hanley Wood Media’s 2015 Report saw cost-to-value ratios increase and exterior-remodeling projects dominated the charts in 2015.

Homeowners in the Des Moines market can expect to recoup upon resale nearly 60 percent of the cost to reside their homes, reports Remodeling Magazine. The replacement of a roof or installation of a new decking system also improve resale values with the immediate benefit of creating a more enjoying living space, and at the same time protecting one’s investment in the home.

While attic bedrooms and basement remodels remain popular, VanWeelden Co. notes that new siding, the replacement of entry doors, and two-story additions were each ranked high this year.

The cost-to-value ratio on the replacement of vinyl siding is 80.7 percent, as an example, compared with only 49 percent for a home office remodel.

Manufactured stone veneer, making its debut on Hanley Wood’s list in 2015, ranked second among all projects nationally with a cost-value return of 92.2 percent.

Looking to go off the charts? The attitude of real estate professionals are reflected on a national level in a Cost vs. Value ratio that shows upgrading your entryway with the installation of a steel door alone stands at 101.8 percent for 2015.
